Tsunami debris threatens Oregon coast

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Sen. Ron Wyden is asking officials to be prepared for debris to make landfall on Oregon's coast.

He's concerned about the impact of debris from the Japan tsunami on Oregon's fishing, crabbing and tourism industries. Wyden wants federal, state and local agencies to start coming up with a plan about how to handle the millions of tons of debris headed to the West Coast.

"I take any threat to the Oregon coast seriously, and millions of tons of debris headed our way sounds serious to me," Wyden said. "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is tracking the debris generated by the Japanese earthquake. I hope the agency's future plans include efforts to involve other agencies and organizations and let Oregon residents know what is going on and how they can help."

Computer models show debris may start showing up on beaches sometime next year.
