The Portland Timbers announced a major signing Monday, bringing the Scottish Premier League's all-time leading scorer to the Rose City.
Kris Boyd scored 164 goals over the course of 10 seasons with Scottish clubs Kilmarnock FC and Rangers FC.
He will be added to the Timbers' roster pending the receipt of his visa and the successful completion of a physical.
Boyd said he hopes he gets his visa in time for the start of the season.
Timbers coach John Spencer described Boyd, who competed in Europe's UEFA Champions League, as "a proven goal-scorer at the highest levels of the game."
"We've been looking for this type of traditional number nine player and are very pleased we found him," Spencer said in a statement on the team's website.
Timbers owner Merritt Paulson also said Boyd perfectly fits the profile of the Timbers' needs. He expects the striker to make a big impact.
"I've said from the beginning, that we are committed to winning and will make a significant investment on the player front if it is the right fit for the organization," Paulson said.
Boyd, who last played with Eskişehirspor in Turkey, will be a designated player for the Timbers, meaning at least part of his salary will not count in the club's salary cap. The exact terms of his contract were not disclosed.
