SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
An ex-convict whose latest charges include attempted elude, reckless driving, and hit-and-run was the subject of a high-speed chase in and around Salem last night.
Two people were hurt during the 27-minute pursuit, when the suspect collided with their vehicle and kept going.
Police first spotted the suspect's 1992 Chevy pick-up just before 11 p.m. on Herrin Road near 48th Street Northeast. The truck took off through a neighborhood before getting on I-5, where it traveled southbound at speeds of up to 105 mph.
The truck re-entered Salem on Kuebler Boulevard Southeast and then sped through neighborhoods at up to 70 mph. Police laid out spike strips near Liberty Road Southeast and Holder Lane, which popped one of the truck's front tires.
Still, the truck continued on Liberty until it got back to Kuebler, where it slammed into a Hyundai Sonata, sending the car's two occupants to the hospital with injuries. The truck kept rolling on a rim, as by now the spiked tire had nearly disintegrated.
Near Joplin Street South and 19th Court, the suspect jumped out of the truck and fled on foot. Police and a canine unit chased the suspect until they caught him a short distance away. The suspect continued to fight with officers, so they used rubber bullets to subdue him.
Kevin Anthony Cox, 46, was arrested and charged on numerous charges. As it turns out, Cox is no stranger to the criminal justice system.
According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, he had been arrested 47 times before on a myriad of charges that include theft, meth possession and burglary.
