Warning about man suspected of approaching student near bus stop

A sixth-grade student said she was approached by a strange man who tried to lure her into his car while she walked to the bus stop, the Clark County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The girl, who attends Thomas Jefferson Middle School, told authorities she was walking on NW Bassell toward her bus stop on 117th Street Thursday morning when he pulled up alongside her in a small, blue car.

"She was really freaked out," said Sara Blackwell, a classmate who normally walks with the girl to the bus stop.

Blackwell was sick that day but told Fox 12 her friend described the man drove up, told her she had missed the bus and offered to give her a ride.

"He pulled around to the bottom of the median on the other side and said, ‘I will take you,'" said Blackwell. "I guess he tried three times, and she said ‘no' and kept running."

The victim managed to get to safety, but parents, including Sara's mom, Janine Blackwell, are now circulating emails warning other families of the incident.

"I would say this guy is a predator," said Blackwell. "Using a ploy, ‘I know you missed the bus;' it's creepy, just really gross."

Blackwell says Thomas Jefferson Middle School sent out a letter as well. She said following the incident, the family reviewed a plan of what to do in case a situation like that occurs again.

"If something is suspicious, or weird, or doesn't feel right, you run; you go get help," said Blackwell.

"It makes me feel a little nervous," said SaraBlackwell who says she and her friend are now extra cautious while walking in the neighborhood.

Students and parents are urged to be alert and vigilant.

"Put out the email to neighbors," said Blackwell.  "Everybody watch out. Let's take care of our streets and take care of the kids."

The Clark County Sheriff's Office says the school resource officer has been notified.

The suspect vehicle is described as a small, new-looking blue car. There's no information on a make or model. The suspect is described as a middle-aged white man with short gray hair and possibly a gray mustache.
