A Tigard businessman helping to distribute medicine and supplies in his native country of Libya has been blocked from flying back into the US.
Jamal Tarhuni, 55, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was denied boarding a U.S. bound flight at a Tunisia airport Jan. 17, and interrogated by the FBI for reasons he claims he doesn't know.
"I very strongly believe the FBI violated my constitutional rights as an American citizen,"said Jamal Tarhuni.
Tarhuni flew to Libya three months ago, to personally deliver millions worth of medical supplies donated by Medical Teams International.
His family says he made the trip himself, to ensure the supplies weren't intercepted at the port and sold on the black market.
The FBI's refusal to allow Tarhuni to fly home has completely shocked his family.
"He shouldn't have to defend his innocence," said daughter Lina Tarhuni. "If he was American by birth, or had features of lighter skin, he may not be subject to this."
Tarhuni is now forced to stay with extended family in Tripoli while he is under investigation. He is only able to communicate with his wife and four kids via Skype.
"I would like to know the information the FBI says they have on me, but they won't tell me," said Jamal Tarhuni.
"The FBI needs to make sure they right this wrong and allow me to get back to my country which I love very much, and my family which I love very much," said Tarhuni.
Tarhuni is adamant that he has never spoken to any terrorist groups, and has never done or said anything that goes against the US.
He is making plans to board a plane once again Feb. 14, despite the FBI's orders not to.
"I will be taking that risk for the sake of my family, and to get back to my country," said Tarhuni.
His family says they are prepared for the worst, but praying for his safe return.
"I just don't think anyone should be subject to this … especially my dad," said Lina Tarhuni.
Senator Ron Wyden tells FOX 12 he has contacted the FBI on Tarhuni's behalf, and encouraged them to treat him fairly.
Wyden expects to hear back from the FBI within the next few days.
