PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Search crews found the body of a missing Mount Hood climber on Tuesday morning, and it appears he died from a severe fall, the sheriff's office said.
A helicopter crew recovered the body of 31-year-old Jared Townsley, of Tigard. Deputies said the State Medical Examiner will determine Townsley's exact cause of death.
Townsley's body was found below cliffs at about 9,200 feet in elevation.
Townsley left Timberline Lodge before midnight Sunday and was expected to return by 11 a.m. Monday. His brother called law enforcement when he had not heard from Townsley by afternoon. Overnight climbs are common for people who plan to summit the mountain.
Deputies say other climbers spotted Townsley about 8:30 a.m. Monday near the Crater Rock area of Mt. Hood. He is believed to have been on his way back down at the time.
Portland Mountain Search and Rescue crews headed up the mountain to search for Townsley, and crews said weather conditions were better than the average search operation.
"Most of them are at night, most of them are in worse weather than this," said Erik Broms, of Portland Mountain Rescue. "At least we've got clear weather, no precipitation and it's not super cold."
The Monday night search turned up no sign of Townsley, but volunteer search crews found him by 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Gregg Townsley, the climber's father, thanked search and rescue teams in a statement. He described his son as a skilled climber who had submitted Mount Hood at least 12 times, including six solo climbs.
Townsley is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and his two children, as well as his older brother Joshua and his sister, Rachel Stramel.
