GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

Two strangers came to the rescue of a woman and her daughter who were attacked by an intruder Saturday afternoon, Gresham police investigators said.

According to police, the man confronted the mother and her 12-year-old daughter as they were walking out of their apartment.  Detectives said the man pushed his way into the apartment, and began to ransack it, before assaulting the victims.

Investigators said that's when two men who happened to hear the commotion came to the rescue.

During a struggle, the accused intruder lost consciousness, and was taken into custody by Gresham police. He was listed in critical condition at a Portland-area hospital.

Detectives have not been able to identify the intruder, but did release a description.  They describe him as a white man about 30 years old, with two ear piercings in his left ear and no teeth. Detectives hope someone will recognize a photograph of some distinctive tattoos on the man's arm.

Anyone with information should contact the Gresham Police Department.
