PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A new rapid flash beacon went into service Tuesday morning on Southwest Barbur Boulevard south of Southwest Hamilton Street.

The Oregon Department of Transportation installed the beacon and said it will improve driver visibility in the area. Additional beacons located in the area will also warn drivers of reduce their speed as they enter the area.

When a pedestrian activates the system, yellow LED lights flash in a random pattern to alert drivers that they should stop to allow the pedestrian to cross safely. When not in use, the beacon remains dark.

Drivers should prepare to stop when the beacon flashes yellow and come to a complete stop behind markings in the pavement until pedestrians have cleared the lane and the adjacent lane.

Pedestrians activate the beacon by pushing a button and should not cross until all drivers in all lanes have stopped. Pedestrians are further advised to stop before crossing each lane to make sure all drivers have come to a complete stop.

The flashing beacon is a cooperative effort involving the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation, TriMet, Southwest Neighborhood Inc., Southwest Trails Inc., the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition and ODOT.
