Presidential candidates to appear on Oregon primary ballot

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

The presidential candidates who will appear on Oregon's primary ballot have been chosen.

Secretary of State Kate Brown determined that President Barack Obama will be the sole Democratic candidate on the ballot. For the Republicans, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum will be listed.

Brown says including presidential candidates on the primary ballot allows Oregon voters time to learn about each candidate and make an informed decision.

By law, presidential candidates can be included on Oregon's ballot in two ways. Generally, it is at the Secretary of State's discretion, if the candidate is recognized by national news media. Other candidates must submit a nominating petition filed with the Secretary of State, along with 1,000 valid signatures from registered voters in each of the five congressional districts in Oregon.

Anyone wishing to cast their ballot in Oregon's presidential primary election must be a registered Democrat or Republican. The last day to register in order to be eligible to vote is Tuesday, April 24, 2012.
