RAINIER, OR (KPTV) -
The 22-year-old man accused of gunning down Rainier's police chief will be arraigned on criminal charges today.
Daniel Butts, of Kalama, will hear the charges he faces after being declared "fit to stand trial" for the January 2011 shooting death of Ralph Painter. Butts has spent more than a year undergoing mental evaluations at Oregon State Hospital.
Police say Painter responded to a disturbance call at a Rainier car stereo shop where Butts fatally shot him during a struggle. Butts was injured during a shootout with officers, but was taken into custody.
Butts has displayed erratic and disruptive behavior during past court appearances.
