Student enrollment is down in Oregon's public schools, but only slightly.
The Oregon Department of Education released the new statewide findings today.
According to the report, Oregon has 560,946 students enrolled in K-12 public schools this year.
That is down slightly from the 2010-2011 school year when there were 561,328 students in the state's public schools.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo says, "The number of kids in Oregon schools has changed very little over the years, but what has changed is the number of students needing extra support and specialized services."
Oregon schools have more special education students as well as more students who don't speak English as their primary language.
The latest enrollment numbers are based on counts reported by school districts, Education Service Districts and state education agencies.
