The mother of a man shot and killed by a Portland police officer explained why she decided to take a $1.2 million settlement from the city.
Marva Davis lost her son Aaron Campbell in January 2010 after Officer Ron Frashour shot him because he thought Campbell was reaching for a gun.
Campbell was unarmed and suicidal over his brother's death earlier that day.
"I lost two sons that day, not just Aaron," Davis told Fox 12 at a press conference held by the Albina Ministerial Alliance on Wednesday. The alliance voiced their support for the family's decision to accept the settlement.
Frashour has since been fired over claims that he used excessive force.
Campbell's family says they didn't want to relive the details of his death during the trial. Davis is hoping that the police bureau will re-evaluate their training regarding deadly force.
"I just hope that we can work together and really get to a point where we can feel good about calling the police and know that everything will be taken, worked out in the right way," said Davis.
The settlement was reached less than a week before the trial was scheduled to begin.
