The owner and president of the Portland Timbers, Merritt Paulson, was named Oregon's "Sportsperson of the Year" during an annual awards show in Beaverton.
Merritt Paulson was awarded the Slats Gill Award at the 60th Oregon Sports Awards Sunday. Paulson, one of five finalists for the award, became just the second non-coach to win the award.
Paulson's Timbers sold out all of their regular-season home games during their inaugural year in Major League Soccer.
Paulson is also a board member of the Oregon Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and the Oregon Sports Authority.
