Police: Cow heart left on doorstep was a joke gift

Posted: Updated:

It's the end to a weeklong mystery. Portland Police say they've found the person responsible for placing a cow heart on the doorstep of a Northwest Portland home.

In a strange twist, police say they were tipped off to the person responsible for placing it there, by none other than culprit herself.

It has been somewhat of a bizarre week for Scott Fleming and his roommates.

It all began Wednesday morning on the 2300 block of NW Flanders, where Fleming walked outside of his home to find a package stuffed with a large cow heart sitting on his doorstep in a box.

Along with package, was a note that read: "You will always have my heart."

"We've been on edge the past couple of days," said Fleming. "I was worried that someone was outside watching me discover this, so I started testing  my roommates and asking what I should do."

Fleming called police as a precaution afraid of the hidden message behind it all. Police quickly began their investigation soon after.

So, you can imagine why Fleming was a little hesitant Friday, when he stumbled across yet another delivery on his doorstep.

"My roommate came home and discovered flowers sitting here," said Fleming.

It seems, the so-called secret admirer had returned to Fleming's home. This time, she left her name, number and an apology.

"It was just sitting here with a note attached that said she was sorry for the mix up, and that she meant it for someone else, a friend apparently," said Fleming.

Police say the woman meant to leave the package as a joke for her friend who lives around the corner from Fleming.

Police say they are no longer looking into the incident.

Fleming says he's glad the mystery is solved, but he can't help but worry about what he may stumble across tomorrow.

"We've been so worried the past couple of days that we would come home to something else," said Fleming.

"I hope the flowers are the end of it all.  I guess was a nice gesture, but I hope its the end."
