Thief targets nursery, steals expensive fish

WOODLAND, WA (KPTV) -

Woodland police are investigating the theft of pond-making materials and an exotic fish imported from Japan.

A filter, a pump and a Koi fish were taken from Tsugawa's Nursery last Friday night or early Saturday morning, police said.

The fish was the largest and most expensive in the inventory and would have sold for $400, the manager said. Another Koi worth $150 was found dead on the floor.

The thief cut through a fence to get on the property and then forced entry into a building that houses pond-making materials.

This is the second theft in recent months. In November, a thief stole $1,200 worth of supplies.

"It's kind of disturbing, you know, it really is," said General Manager Brian Tsugawa, whose family has owned the nursery for 30 years. "I can deal with it one time, but being a second time, it's a problem and it's really just frustrating."

Woodland police are investigating the possibility that the thief is using the items take to build a pond for a home or business, but there are no solid leads.

The nursery is planning to install an elaborate surveillance system with high-resolution cameras all over the property to prevent another break-in, the manager said.

The business has been the victim of thieves six times since 2004, police said.
