PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Federal authorities said an unruly passenger booted off a Continental flight mentioned Osama bin Laden and a hatred of women after being asked to put away his electronic cigarette.
Continental Flight 1118 left Portland International Airport at around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Shortly after takeoff, Yazeed Mohammed Abunayyan began using an electronic cigarette, which are subject to the same rules as regular cigarettes, according to Port of Portland police. As a result, flight attendants asked Abunayyan to put it away.
In court documents, authorities accuse him of refusing to relinquish the e-cigarette when asked by the flight attendant.
A grand jury indictment also said Abunayyan yelled profanities, swung his fist at the flight attendant, hit or attempted to hit several passengers, and spoke or sung about Osama bin Laden and his hatred of women.
Once Abunayyan was detained, the flight returned to Portland without further incident, police said.
It's Abunayyan's second brush with law enforcement in a three-day span. Jackson County jail deputies said the man was booked on charges of driving under the influence, criminal mischief, hit-and-run, attempting to elude police, assaulting a police officer and reckless endangering in an incident in Ashland over the weekend.
He posted $6,500 bail on Monday.
In his most recent arrest, Abunayyan refused to give his home address to the Multnomah County Jail, but a records search by FOX 12 showed he lives in Rohnert Park, CA, which is near Napa.
Abunayyan's first court appearance was set for Wednesday afternoon.
