PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
One of the most popular animals at the Oregon Zoo was euthanized Tuesday after suffering advanced kidney failure.
Pete, a 24-year-old eastern black rhinoceros, came to Portland as a 500-pound juvenile more than 20 years ago. Zoo staff says his easy-going demeanor made him an instant hit.
"This is a very sad day for everyone who knew Pete," said Zoo Curator Michael Illig. "He may have looked tough, but he was really one of the calmest, most sweet-tempered animals I've ever known."
Illig, who was Pete's original keeper when the rhino arrived at the Oregon Zoo in 1988, says Pete had struggled recently with chronic kidney disease. Over the past several days, he says animal care staff noticed his health had declined substantially.
"His skin condition deteriorated, he was retaining fluids and had difficulty breathing," Illig said. "It was clear he was suffering, and there was nothing more we could do to help him."
Pete would have turned 25 years old this May.
Zoo officials say they will look for another male rhino to bring to the Oregon Zoo.
