Prosecutors in Washington say a woman tried to hire a hit man to kill her husband.
Karen Lofgren, of Gig Harbor, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and solicitation to commit first-degree murder on Friday.
Prosecutors say an ugly divorce and the prospect of cashing in on a $1 million life insurance policy were two factors in Lofgren's decision to try and have her husband killed. Investigators say the couple are also in a custody battle over their two young daughters.
A federal probation officer called detectives after an offender he supervises said Lofgren asked for his help to "get rid" of her husband.
That's when detectives launched a sting operation.
Investigators say Lofgren met with an undercover detective who she thought was a hit man. She allegedly offered the detective $5,000 diamond earrings as a down payment.
