Rural legislators wary of Oregon State Police cuts

Posted: Updated:

Rural legislators say a budget-slashing plan to cut detectives from the Oregon State Police will disproportionately affect rural areas.

In a last-ditch effort to rescue positions that they say are critical to public safety in sparsely-populated areas, the legislators say they found $6 million on Tuesday to stave off some of the proposed cuts.

The state police expect to lose 12 detective positions. Earlier this year, it had anticipated losing up to 25 detectives.

Rep. Greg Smith says the loss of a single trooper is similar to cutting the police force of a rural community.

The Legislature is attempting to conclude its session by Thursday.

The agency will not release details on the proposed cuts or the geographic area from which they would come.
