Police: Large drug lab found in St. Helens home

ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

A large drug lab was reportedly uncovered in a St. Helens neighborhood blocks away from a local school, fire station and police department.

It happened early Thursday afternoon on the 100 block of 13th Street. Police say the people responsible for building the lab are still at large.

Police were tipped off to what was going on at the home after the landlord noticed the tenants hadn't been home in while.

When the landlord walked inside to check on them, he discovered glassware and chemicals lying everywhere.

"It's scary you know," said neighbor Larry Vandolah. "It's happening a block away from a school, police department and fire station, it's just crazy."

After getting a warrant for the home, St. Helens detectives quickly moved in but had to call for backup after discovering just how big the drug lab was.

An extensive amount of chemicals were reportedly removed from both the home and the garage. Police say they are now working to test the mixtures in order to know exactly what type of drug they are dealing with.

"Hopefully they catch the guys and they make them pay," said neighbor Melchor Villa. "In a neighborhood full of kids, this shouldn't be happening."

Detectives say their first priority was to make sure all of the hazardous materials from inside of the home were removed in order to make sure the neighborhood was safe.

Now that they have cleared the home, they are actively searching for the tenants.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call the St. Helens Police Department.
