The Portland Housing Bureau broke ground Monday morning on the latest phase of The Yards at Union Station, a residential and retail redevelopment on the site of a former 7-acre field behind Union Station.
The first three phases of The Yards project have already been completed, providing industrial northwest Portland with 535 mixed-income units.
The new phase of construction will provide 80 additional units, which the housing bureau says will be affordable to a family of four earning less that $43,000.
PHB will leverage $10.2 million in private loans and equity to finance a large portion of the project's $15 million estimated cost. The project is expected to produce more than 200 jobs during its construction and to achieve LEED Silver certification.
