A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of work on a new park in Northwest Portland.
It's called "The Fields" park and it's located at Northwest Overton and Northwest 10th Street in the Pearl District.
Portland Parks commissioner Nick Fish attended a groundbreaking ceremony at the park Tuesday afternoon.
"We are excited to build this new urban green space, the third in a sequence of parks in the Pearl District," said Commissioner Fish. "It's a win-win: a new recreation area for families, and much-needed construction jobs for our community."
The park covers about 3.2 acres.
When it's finished, the park will feature a kids area, dog park, strolling paths, sitting areas and picnic tables.
The Portland Development Commission is providing more than $5 million in funding. The Portland Parks and Recreation department is contributing about $400,000.
R&R General Contractors of Salem are building the park.
Construction is expected to wrap up by the winter of 2013.
"The Fields" is the third park outlined in the Portland River District Park System Urban Design Framework Study of 2001.
That study outlined plans for four parks in the area between Northwest 10th and 11th avenues, starting at Northwest Johnson.
The four parks include Jamison Square, Tanner Springs, The Fields and a planned Riverfront Park.
