Runners hit pavement to support women in Congo

Posted: Updated:

Runners laced up their sneakers Thursday in support of women in Africa.

The Run for Congo Women 10K event aimed to raise enough money to provide support and a year of job training to eight women in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Race organizer Amanda Ulrich said many women in Congo are victims of conflict fueled by the mining of minerals that wind up in electronics.

The Run for Congo Women event started in 2006 when a Portland woman organized a solo run.

The movement has since expanded to runs and walks throughout the United States.

Thursday is also International Women's Day.
