LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

A man who lives at a Lake Oswego retirement community has been awarded the nation's highest civilian honor given by Congress for his service in World War II.

Ken Yaguchi, 89, received a Congressional Gold Medal during a regional celebration, and was also honored during a large ceremony in Washington D.C. last fall.

"I really feel humbled for all the stuff they're doing for us. We're just regular GIs. We fought the war. We had to fight to defend our country, the country that we love," he said.

Yaguchi is currently a resident at The Stafford retirement community in Lake Oswego, where he participates in the choir and is married to his wife of more than 60 years, Kazie.

A special celebration honoring Yaguchi is scheduled there on Tuesday, May 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
