NEWPORT, OR (AP) -

Four surfers had to be rescued this weekend off the Oregon coast north of Newport.

Newport firefighters say they received a report of surfers in distress along the rocks on the south side of Yaquina Head at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The surfers were first spotted by a security officer who was on patrol in the area.

Arriving police officers and firefighters saw three of the surfers clinging to rocks at Quarry Cove. The fourth surfer had gotten into the water in an attempt to rescue his friends, police say.

Two of the surfers were helped to shore at Quarry Cove and the third was able to swim back to Agate Beach. The fourth was helped to shore at the western end of Yaquina Head at Pebble Beach.

Firefighters say none of the surfers were injured, although they were cold and tired.
