PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A gunshot victim found in a car along Interstate 205 on Wednesday night has been identified as a Portland opera singer, well known in the music community.

Brian Tierney, 29, is in critical condition at a Portland hospital, but a close family friend told FOX  12 on Friday evening that he's showing signs of improvement.

Tierney also serves as assistant choir director at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in northeast Portland.  He was found shot shortly after leaving choir rehearsal Wednesday night.

"I just can't imagine," said Reverend Gabriel Lamazares, who described Tierney as kind and talented.  "The sweetest possible guy -- he has a wife and young daughter, and he was just coming home from choir rehearsal."

Officers found Tierney inside his 2007 blue Chevy Cobalt around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday on I-205 near the Division exit.  Police said they believe the shooting occurred on the freeway and Good Samaritans stopped to help.

Portland police said the shooting doesn't appear to be any kind of sniper situation, but they're still searching for a motive and can't say whether the shooting was targeted or random.

"We can't imagine what it could be -- just senseless," said Rev. Lamazares.  "My understanding is he wasn't shot just once, but multiple times."

"We ask for prayers for his healing and for his family," he said.  A prayer vigil will be held at St. Michael and All Angels on Northeast 43rd Avenue at 7 p.m. Friday.

Colleagues at the Portland Opera told FOX 12 they're equally stunned.

"We were all very shocked," said Clare Burovac, the director of artistic operations at the Portland Opera, where Tierney sings in the Elite Chorus.

"The Portland arts community is a very tight-knit group, and I know there are thousands of people in Portland and across the United States who are sending their thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for Brian," said Burovac.

Tierney, who lives in Portland with his family, according to a biography on a local music group website, has a music degree from Portland State University and has performed in numerous operas, some of them in lead roles.

Burovac told FOX 12 she spotted his talent at a local performance in 2010 and invited him to sing for the Portland Opera.

"It's a beautiful voice and he's a great talent and asset to the Chorus," said Burovac.

Detectives said they have very little information and are asking for the public's help to figure out what happened.

The police bureau released images of a car identical to the one belonging to Tierney.

Anyone who saw a small, blue, four-door 2007 Chevy Cobalt pulled over on the right side of I-205 near Division or saw any suspicious activity in the area is asked to call police at 503-823-0451 or e-mail paul.dolbey@portlandoregon.gov.
