Officials announce new NW rail corridor plan

State officials in Oregon and Washington have unveiled a new plan to improve train service between Eugene and Vancouver, B.C.

In a joint news release, Washington Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond and Oregon Director of Transportation Matt Garrett announced a new partnership to develop faster, more frequent Amtrak service between the cities.

Oregon officials said they plan to add two new trains to the fleet, and Washington officials announced that they've secured $800 million in federal funding to help upgrade the train lines.

According to the news release, the Amtrak Cascades line has seen a 51 percent increase in ridership in the past decade.
