Students, parents rally behind Outdoor School

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Public Schools held a budget meeting at Roosevelt High School on Wednesday night.

The topic on many people's minds was the fate of the Outdoor School.  The program is on the chopping block after being reduced to three days a week last year.

Students and parents showed up in support of the 45-year-old program that many Portlanders experienced almost as a rite of passage.

Supporters of the curriculum said more than half of its funding comes from outside sources, such as grants and fees paid by students' families, and only a small portion of the cost comes from the district's overall budget.

Supporters said that in addition to being a Portland institution, it's a way to engage students and get them excited about science.
