A boat was just 10 feet away from some fuel pumps when it went up in flames at a northeast Portland yacht club, firefighters said.

The owner had just finished fueling his 32-foot boat on Tuesday when the fire started, crews said. He tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher but suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation in the process.

Deputies and police soon arrived at the Tyee Yacht Club on boats and sprayed water from the Columbia River. On land, firefighters used foam to extinguish the flames.

Members of the Coast Guard also arrived to watch for any environmental hazards and placed booms around the boat to contain any fuel.

"Fires on boats are dangerous because they carry large amounts of fuel and are moored close together; fires in marinas can quickly get out of hand and spread to nearby boats if not quickly contained," said Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman Paul Corah in a news release.

Damage is estimated at $150,000. The fire's cause is currently unknown.

Eastbound Marine Drive was temporarily closed at Northeast 33rd Avenue due to the blaze.
