GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A short-lived strike by Gresham-Barlow school teachers came to an end Wednesday when the teachers union reached a deal with the school district.

Specifics of the deal were not announced.

"We feel it meets our needs," said Tom Urbanowicz, the bargaining chair for the teachers.

Teachers were asked to return to class so they could prepare for a full school day Thursday at all Gresham-Barlow schools.

"We are glad that we were able to avert a work stoppage," said Superintendent Jim Schlachter, in a statement.

Gresham-Barlow teachers started their strike at 6 a.m. after the two sides were unable to reach a deal after lengthy negotiations.

Students at Gresham and Barlow high schools staged a walk-out in support of the teachers Tuesday afternoon. Teachers said they're happy to have a tentative deal in place.

"Now that we have a fair contract, we are eager to get back to working in our schools," Urbanowicz said in a statement.
