FOREST GROVE, OR (KPTV) -

Fire crews rescued a man from his burning condominium in Forest Grove.

The fire started just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning at the condo on 19th Avenue near Oak Street.

That's when a downstairs neighbor heard a popping noise and went to investigate. He saw smoke coming from the unit above and called 911.

Fire crews say they had to force entry into the burning unit. A Dog and cat rushed from the condo when firefighters opened the door.

Firefighters say they discovered the fire burning in the kitchen. One fireman was able to put the fire out while a second searched the condo.

Lieutenant Chris Woodford found a man in the first bedroom he searched. That man was reportedly unconscious and unresponsive.

Emergency crews took the victim to Tuality Community Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Investigators say the fire was started by a pan that was left on the stove was turned on high.

The fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen and fire investigators estimated the damage to the home and contents at $40,000.

No working smoke alarms were found at the damaged condo and the building does not have a sprinkler system.
