LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

A man trying to shoplift from Fred Meyer pulled a samurai sword on security guards, according to Longview police.

Officers approached the man, who they suspected of stealing a box of boots and some alcohol, at about 12:30 Monday afternoon.

The man pulled the sword, which police say was described as having an 18-inch blade, out of his coat when officers identified themselves.

They backed off and the suspect got away. He was last seen running through an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Maryland Street.

The incident happened at the same Fred Meyer store where another shoplifter attacked a security guard with a hatchet. Adrian Kramer cut off part of the security guard's ear on Dec. 11. He was sentenced just last week to nearly 35 years in prison for the attack.

The security guard injured in the December attack was not involved in Monday's incident.

A Fred Meyer spokeswoman said the store is safe and that these are just two unusual incidents.

On Tuesday, police released surveillance photos of the suspect in hopes that the public can help identify him.

He is described as a white male in his 30s, about 5'7" tall, very skinny with dark hair, a mustache and goatee. He was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, a black leather jacket and blue or black jeans.

If you know the suspect or have any information, call Longview police at 360-442-5800.
