WASHINGTON COUNTY (KPTV) -
James Speidel is scheduled to appear in a Washington County courtroom this morning for a preliminary hearing.
Deputies said the Nike executive tried to blow up his Bethany home while his family was sleeping inside.
Washington County sheriff's deputies believe the 36-year-old man tried to cause a gas explosion at his family's northwest Portland home last week.
Investigators said the main natural gas line had been intentionally cut and moved to the home's crawl space.
They said Speidel's wife smelled the gas, got her kids out of the house and called for help.
Speidel, who works for Nike as business director, was arrested a short time later in a grassy area not far from his home.
He faces five counts of attempted aggravated murder.
He's being held on $1 million bail.
