VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -
Dozens gathered for a vigil to pay tribute to a pedestrian hit and killed by a car and to raise awareness about safety concerns for a busy Vancouver street.
The vigil took place on Fourth Plain near Wilson Avenue where Maria Carrasco, 25, was killed while walking in a crosswalk last week. Witnesses said the signal light was blinking when a car came speeding out of nowhere. Police later arrested James Collins for the crime.
People in the neighborhood are vowing to hold a protest every day this week in hopes that the roadway can be made safer. Many want the crosswalk replaced with a traffic light.
"Stuff like that needs to stop," said Rachel McBean, a protester. "They need to put something in to make it where people actually stop."
Fox 12 is still waiting to hear from the city officials about the concerns.
