HOOD RIVER, OR (KPTV) -

Fire destroyed an abandoned house in the 700 block of Hazel Street in Hood River on Monday night, according to the Hood River Fire Department.

Crews responded to the call at approximately 10:15 p.m. and arrived to find the three-story home fully engulfed in flames, firefighters said.

The fire was initially reported by neighbors, who said they saw flickering light from their bedroom windows, investigators said. According to a news release, firefighters decided to take a defensive position when they arrived at the scene because the fire had dramatically increased in size within minutes of first being reported.

According to firefighters, the cause of the fire is suspicious and is currently under investigation.  The home had been vacant for nearly 20 years, investigators said.
