Hit-and-run driver gets 18-month sentence for killing Clackamas teen

OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

A man who struck and killed a Clackamas teenager last summer received an 18-month prison sentence Wednesday as part of a plea deal.

Artyom Pavlenko struck and killed 18-year-old Michael Vu as Vu was riding his bike home from a friend's house last summer.

Pavlenko drove off, but later turned himself in. On Wednesday, the judge told Pavlenko that, as a driver, he has a responsibility and that he should have stopped to help Vu.

"(I'm) the first one to take complete and full responsibility for the death of Mikey," Pavlenko said.

Garland Smith, Vu's uncle, said family members will miss Vu "every day for the rest of our lives."

"I think it's more of a matter of one more milestone that we've reached," Smith said of the sentencing. "And now we can deal with it in a personal way."

In a courtroom in March, Pavlenko pleaded guilty to a felony hit-and-run charge after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.

In addition to the 18-month prison sentence, Pavlenko received three years of post-prison supervision.

Despite the maximum sentence being handed down, Vu's family plans to ask lawmakers for stiffer penalties for hit-and-run cases.
