PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The FBI is now looking into three white powder scares in a two-day span in Portland.
On Wednesday, Portland firefighters and hazmat crews responded to both ends of the city as two major landmarks reported receiving a letter with a mysterious substance inside.
Crews arrived at the downtown Hilton Hotel shortly after 5 p.m. to isolate the office space and the worker who came in contact with the envelope.
Hazmat teams then tested it to see if it was anthrax, radioactive or some other dangerous substance.
Meanwhile, the hotel remained open. No guests reported any symptoms of illness.
Crews eventually determined that the white powder in the envelope was not dangerous.
It was a similar scene at the Port of Portland offices where the word "anthrax" was found on an envelope. At one point, all three floors were evacuated, but the terminals and travel were not affected.
Again, tests on the envelope at the Port of Portland also came back negative.
The scares have an all too common occurrence for firefighters and hazmat crews. One day earlier, they responded to the Lloyd Center Mall for another white powder scare.
They say they're frustrated with whomever is planting these envelopes, but will continue to respond as though each were a serious threat.
"What we do is worst-case scenario. I'm not going to miss one in 10,000 -- it could be the big one," Hazmat Team Coordinator Grant Coffey said.
"We're going to look into it a little more, but the office is totally reopened now. It's safe and sound and all is well," Port of Portland spokesman Steven Johnson said.
Firefighters said no one in the hotel or the Port of Portland was ever in danger.
Meanwhile, the FBI has taken over the investigation to see if all or any of these cases are related.
