Dozens of rescued shar-peis now up for adoption

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Dozens of dogs rescued from a Washington breeder are now up for adoption.

The Oregon Humane Society put about 30 shar-pei dogs up for adoption today. The dogs were rescued from a breeder in Goldendale who was overwhelmed with the cost and time required to care for them.

"Many of these dogs were treated for skin and eye infections that are common to this breed," said Dr. Kris Otteman, OHS Director of Shelter Medicine. "There are also several dogs with severe eye damage and limited sight. These are truly pets that need to be rescued."

Each dog, in addition to being spayed or neutered, comes with initial vaccinations, a free medical exam and many other extras.

A dog lover named Simon Ed says he learned about the rescued animals from a customer who came into the tattoo shop where he works.

"If I could, I'd rescue all of them. If I were rich, I wouldn't have 10 cars and 30 rooms, I'd have 30 shar-peis. I'm like the crazy cat lady of shar-peis, so it's like if I could have all of them I would," he told Fox 12.

Ed adopted two of the dogs today.

OHS will provide a complete medical consultation to make sure new adopters are familiar with the needs of the dogs. The dogs range in age from 6 months to 6 years old.

Although all dogs are recovering, about a dozen are still receiving care and are not yet ready to be adopted. Those dogs are still being nursed back to health at the OHS Animal Medical Learning Center.
