PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A southeast Portland woman was driving a Chevy SUV at a speed of about 90 mph on Wednesday before she lost control and crashed into a telephone pole, police said.

Shelby Williams, 33, died in the wreck at East Burnside and Northeast 146th Avenue on Wednesday.

Portland police said Williams' 2012 Chevy Traverse SUV was heading west on Burnside when she struck a tree and went through several yards before finally crashing into the pole.

Williams was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

A second crash victim, 28-year-old Cleveland Nelson, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

SLIDESHOW: Fatal Burnside crash

"I was sound asleep, and I heard this huge, huge bang," said witness Bruce Fagerberg. "I guess the guy came through and hit the telephone pole by the apartments."

One witness said she came rushing out of her home after the crash.

"There was this car almost in my house," she said. "And I was hysterical."

A police investigation shut down Burnside westbound from 146th to 148th avenues. Traffic was diverted off Burnside for several hours.

Meanwhile, TriMet officials said shuttle buses were temporarily used to take MAX riders between the 122nd and 148th platforms.
