BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A young child is reunited with his mother after he was taken out of the country by his father without her permission.

Police arrested Marc Marenco in the San Francisco airport Tuesday.  Police say he fled to New Zealand two years ago with his son, and ever since, his mother has been fighting to get him back.

The boy's mother, Anna Marenco, flew from Beaverton to San Francisco this week to reunite with her son for the first time at the airport.

Police say this all began with a custody battle dating back to 2010.

Marc Marenco took his son from Beaverton to New Zealand, in the middle of that custody fight, according to police.

The Beaverton Police Department worked closely with Interpol, U.S. Customs and U.S. Marshals to issue a warrant for Marenco's arrest.

A New Zealand court also found in the mother's favor and ordered both Marenco and his son to return to the U.S. Once they arrived, he was taken into custody.

"We're just really happy for her, I'm very pleased she has success," said Anna Marenco's former neighbor, Eric Jensen. "She was always contacting lawyers and seeing where things were at, she was relentless at getting her son back and I thought that was noble."

Marc Marenco is being held in a California jail awaiting transfer back to Oregon.

He's charged with custodial interference.
