Grande Ronde, OR (KPTV) -
A pick-up truck that veered to avoid traffic congestion on Highway 18 fatally struck a bicyclist who was riding in the shoulder.
Oregon State Police say Steven Dayley, age 65, of Camas, was transported to Salem Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Dayley was riding westbound at about milepost 24 when the accident happened. He was riding with some others who were entered in the "Reach the Beach" bike ride, though Dayley himself was not an entrant.
The driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche that hit him was being driven by Fred Moore, age 24, of Battle Ground. He was not injured.
The accident is still under investigation.
