Search suspended for 5-year-old boy missing in Santiam River

GATES, OR (KPTV) -

The effort to recover the body of a 5-year-old boy in the Santiam River has been suspended.

The search began Friday when the boy fell into the water while fishing with his father. They were at Niagara County Park near Gates.

A family friend dove in to try and save the boy, but he drowned as well.

High water and strong currents have made the search difficult for divers and swift water teams. Search efforts will resume when water levels recede.
