Cold Case: SE Portland man shot to death in bed

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

"They called me at like three in the morning.  My uncle told me something bad had happened."

In an instant, ordinary life stopped for Michael Roby, who began a painful quest to find his brother's killers.

"He is my little brother and definitely these people don't care about life, about anybody," Roby said.

It was Oct. 31, 1993, all was quiet in unit No. 97 at an apartment complex on Southeast Cherry Blossom.

Keith Roby, 29, was there with his girlfriend Portland police cold case detective Mary Wheat said the couple was asleep in bed.

"They had been out the night before, various places around Portland, celebrating Halloween and, him and his girlfriend at the time, were asleep in their bed," Wheat said. "Someone came in and forced their way in and shot Keith."

Investigators said the two suspects had their faces covered and shouted that they were the police before multiple shots were fired.

Roby's girlfriend was not hurt, but Roby died at the apartment.

"I went to see him a few days before this happened. I'm really glad I did, the next time I seen him, it was different," Roby's brother recalled.

He said his brother was a kind and friendly man, but that he'd been involved with the wrong crowd.

The Roby family believes marijuana trafficking may have played a role in the murder.

Investigators will only say robbery may have been a motive.

"I've collected pictures of people and information for a long time and none of it has paid off," Roby said.

"You've really got to open to anything out there. There's a reason it wasn't solved," Wheat said.

And Roby feels driven to help solve the case, as a tribute to a little brother he still misses every day.

"it's time. It's time for them to pay for this. They can't get away from it forever," Roby said.
