PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

If you're about to hit the road for the three-day weekend, you may be shocked by what you're about to pay to fill up your gas tank.

The average price nationwide for a gallon of regular gas dropped one cent overnight to $3.66.

In the Pacific Northwest, however, drivers will be paying much more - the average price for a gallon in Oregon is $4.22, and in Washington it's $4.24.

AAA expects more people to hit the roads this year rather than fly, and most will be traveling  50 miles or less to get to their destination. Many Oregonians echoed that estimate and told FOX 12 they're staying close to home this weekend.

"It's pretty extreme to even drive a car as small as mine," said Michelle Kerslake, of Corbett. "So we'll probably just stay at home and have our own campfire."

Prices in the Northwest are higher than any other part of the continental U.S. The Los Angeles Times reports that when refineries have problems with their supply, it creates more work for our region to get fuel.

AAA also said it has seen a surge in family bookings for shorter vacations this year.
