Good Samaritans stop robbery attempt in Metzger

METZGER, OR (KPTV) -

A robbery attempt at a Metzger convenience store was foiled by two bystanders who tackled the suspect and held him until sheriff's deputies arrived.

According to investigators, 21-year-old David Hager knocked on the door of the Metzger Market on Southwest Hall Boulevard at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday, after the store was already closed. When the owner refused to let Hager inside, police said Hager broke out the front and rear windows of the owner's car, then forced his way into the store with an Airsoft pistol.

Two men at a bar across the street noticed what was going on and rushed over to help. Deputies said David Sundberg and Nolan Quigley distracted Hager and were able to tackle him to the ground.

"As soon as I ran in I grabbed his arm that had the pistol and then we both took him straight to the ground and subdued him," said Quigley.

They held him until law enforcement arrived.

"He realized he was in trouble and there was no more fight in him so he just stayed there until police came and arrested him," said Quigley.

Hager suffered minor injuries but he was not taken to the hospital.

Hager was booked into the Washington County Jail on charges of robbery II, kidnapping II and criminal mischief. He is being held on a $250,000 bail.

Quigley and Sundberg said they would do it again if they had to.

"I don't feel like a hero," said Sundberg. "I just feel like someone who helped someone else out."
