Coast Guard rescues two overdue divers

NORTH BEND, OR (KPTV) -

The Coast Guard rescued two people from Island Rock near Port Orford, Oregon.

Officials received a report of two overdue divers at about 9 p.m. on Saturday.

The Coast Guard responded and looked for the two men by sea and by air.

Eventually, crews found the divers on Island Rock.

They were actually signaling the Coast Guard with flashlights.

Because of the large numbers of birds on the island, the chopper could not land, but the divers were safely picked up by the lifeboat crew and taken to Gold Beach.

The divers' own 20-foot zodiac drifted away from them when the anchor gave way.  The Coast Guard found the zodiac on Sunday and returned it to the divers.
