A 51-year-old woman who works as a library aide at South Albany High School is accused of having a sexual encounter with a student as well as sending sexually explicit text messages and photos to him and two other students.
The investigation into Heidi Hyre started back in February when a rumor began circulating around South Albany High School. School principal Brent Belveal said police did not find enough evidence at the time but continued to investigate.
Detectives interviewed three students who police said sent and received sexually explicit messages and photos with Hyre via text message.
Officers said there was also a sexual encounter between Hyre and one of the students in her car in December 2011. The incident happened in the 1300 block of Southeast Oak Street, a location that is halfway between the school and Hyre's home.
"It's a huge shock to personally know her and to love and adore her. I really do enjoy her. And to hear that something like this could happen," said Courtney Martin, who works as a Young Life group leader at the school. "I understand it's not excusable, I understand how it might have happened. Working with kids and, like I said, in this day and age of texting and conversations in secret a lot. One tiny door that opens, leads to lots of bad doors."
Hyre has been employed in the Greater Albany Public Schools district for four years. She was put on paid leave May 18, said Belveal.
She now faces charges of using a child in display of sexually explicit conduct, encouraging child sex abuse, luring a minor, sex abuse and contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor.
Albany police are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 541-917-7686.
