Construction worker survives close call with semi on Marquam Bridge

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A construction worker on the Marquam Bridge is lucky to be alive after a close call with a semi truck Wednesday morning.

Monty McLaughlin was mid-span on the lower deck cleaning things up when he suddenly heard a co-worker yell out to him.

Apparently, two truck drivers were trying to pass each other at a merge point on the span where McLaughlin was working. Thanks to the alert from his co-worker, McLaughlin was able to jump out of the way and jump up onto a bridge railing.

The trucks collided, but there were no injuries to the semi drivers, McLaughlin or any of the other construction workers on the bridge at the time.

"The guy I was working with yelled and said there was a truck. I turned around and I saw the truck coming into our lane. I jumped up on the bridge rail and just held on tight," McLaughlin said.

It took the Oregon Department of Transportation about four hours to remove the trucks from the bridge.
