Report: FBI wants to 'wiretap' Facebook

Posted: Updated:

A report on Time magazine's website says the Federal Bureau of Investigation may want to be your new friend on Facebook.

Time's Adam Cohen reported the FBI wants to shift its wiretapping from telephone lines to person-to-person platforms like email, instant messaging and Facebook.

To help it make the switch, the FBI is asking Congress to require tech companies to rewrite their applications so they all have a "back door" that the FBI can use to listen in.

This month, FBI director Robert Mueller told Congress his agency would like to see the wiretap law change.
