PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police say a man struck an officer with his car and then sped out of the parking lot of Sam's Hideaway on Southeast 162nd Avenue on Friday morning.

Police first approached the occupant of a vehicle stopped there at about 9 a.m.

As one officer walked in front of the car, police said the driver accelerated and struck him in the lower legs. The driver then sped away.

Officers later found the car in front of a nearby apartment complex.

After a search of the area using a K-9 unit, police located and arrested the suspect inside one of the apartments.

Percival Stewart III is now charged with assaulting a police officer, attempting to elude police and reckless driving.

The officer who police said was struck by Stewart did not suffer any major injuries.
